Stroke Program

Patients need a healing environment and specialized care. Phoenix Children’s Hospital’s expert team offers this and so much more.

The Stroke Program Team

The risk of stroke is highest during the first year of life, but it can occur any time throughout childhood or adolescence.

Our dedicated team has the expertise needed for the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric stroke and pediatric stroke prevention. Our team includes:

  • Pediatric neurologists specializing in stroke
  • Pediatric neuroradiologists
  • Pediatric specialists in hematology and vascular medicine
  • Cardiologists
  • Rheumatologists
  • Psychiatrists
  • Physical, occupational and speech therapists

This comprehensive care includes the evaluation, management and treatment of stroke patients, as well as those who may be at risk for stroke due to other medical conditions. We treat:

  • Infants
  • Children
  • Teens

Treatment includes neuroprotective measures, which include maintaining adequate blood pressure and supplying fluids and appropriate medication. The patient may also need physical rehabilitation. We make it a priority to give every patient exactly what they need on the journey to wellness.

Recovering from stroke

Stroke is the sixth leading cause of death in children. That’s why early recognition and diagnosis is critical for stroke patients. The good news is that children tend to recover from stroke better than adults. This is due to the plasticity of their brains and because their brains are still in development.

Around the clock care

We know that a stroke can happen at any time, and when it does, Phoenix Children’s is there to help. For physicians and EMS workers, our stroke team is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to lend their expertise on pediatric stroke cases.
