Complex Congenital Heart Follow-up Programs

The philosophy of the Children's Heart Center at Phoenix Children's Hospital is to provide exceptional family-centered care to patients and families. Our interdisciplinary team is dedicated to promoting and supporting the individual needs of each child and family in a caring and child-friendly environment.

In every way, the Phoenix Children's Heart Center is a comprehensive center of excellence that coordinates all of the programs and services involved in the post-care of children who have undergone surgical procedures for congenital heart disease. The continuum of care begins with neonates with our fetal cardiology program and continues into young adulthood. We provide complex congenital heart follow-up programs including:

CHAMPIONS Turns Out Healthy Graduates

The Phoenix Children’s Medical Group Cardiac High Acuity Monitoring Program for Infants & Newborns (CHAMPIONS) is designed to monitor infants born with complex heart defects that require a series of heart surgeries. CHAMPIONS is one of only a handful of programs in the country that focuses on interstage mortality and optimizing growth and nutrition for high-risk infants.

The Cardiac High Acuity Monitoring Program for Infants & Newborns, otherwise known as CHAMPIONS, is designed to monitor infants born with heart conditions that frequently require a series of heart surgeries. The program is unique to Phoenix Children’s and is the first to offer it in the Southwest. CHAMPIONS relies strongly on a plan developed by the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, and draws on elements procured from various other institutions across the country. The end result ensures that each family leaves the hospital with a meticulous checklist in hand, open lines of communication and an established network of support.

CHAMPIONS is one of only a handful of these programs in the country, and accepts any infant deemed high risk for any sort of complex congenital heart problem. This program monitors patients throughout their course of treatment, ensuring that all involved parties, including parents and pediatricians, are well-informed and kept in the loop regarding all steps of the process.

In addition to offering patients a state-of-the-art facility and world-renowned surgeons capable of performing the most complex of procedures, one of the standout elements of CHAMPIONS is its commitment to continuity of care and open communication. Cardiologists within the Phoenix Children's Heart Center have noted significant improvements in family satisfaction as a result of the program.

Single Ventricle and Shunt Follow-up Program

A long-standing program with impressive results

Phoenix Children's Heart Center operates a unique program providing comprehensive follow-up care for children with complex congenital heart disease who have undergone heart procedures to repair defects. Cardiologists monitor patients throughout their course of treatment, ensuring parents and the referring pediatrician are kept updated on all steps of recovery.

Neonates with complex congenital heart disease conditions may undergo a Norwood, Sano, or BT Shunt operation. Modeled after a plan that was hand-picked from various other institutions and now a part of a national American College of Cardiology committee, Phoenix Children's cardiologists follow high risk neonates throughout their first year of life. The end result: each family leaves the hospital with a meticulous checklist in hand, open lines of communication and an established network of support.

This complex congenital follow-up program is unique to the Southwest. It accepts any infant deemed high risk for any sort of complex congenital heart problem. Monitoring patients throughout their course of treatment, parents and pediatricians are well-informed and kept in the loop regarding all steps of the process.

In addition to offering patients a new, state-of-the-art facility and world-renowned surgeons capable of performing the most complex of procedures, one of the standout elements of this intensive follow-up program is its commitment to continuity of care and open communication. Cardiologists within the Phoenix Children's Heart Center have noted significant improvements in family satisfaction as a result of the program.
