Curriculum

Sports Medicine Fellowship

Each year includes 4 weeks of vacation (1 week of CME)

Year 1

The emphasis during the first year of the fellowship is to gain experience in the clinical practice of Sports Medicine:

  • Continuity clinic: 1 half day per week
  • Fellow’s didactics: every Wednesday morning
  • Scholarly activity: fellows in the first year identify and submit a case or research for presentation at a national meeting (AMSSM, ACSM, AAP).
  • Clinical rotations: Pediatric Sports Medicine, Adult Sports Medicine, Concussion clinic, Pediatric Rheumatology, Physical Therapy, Radiology, Pediatric Ortho Spine
  • Sports coverage: dedicated high school, training room and game coverage at Grand Canyon University (GCU), community-based sporting event opportunities

Year 2

During the second year of training, fellows are allowed ample time to complete scholarly activities. In addition, fellows participate in clinical care as junior faculty holding their own Sports Medicine clinic 4-5 half days per week.

  • Fellow’s didactics: every Wednesday morning
  • Scholarly activity: Focus on design, execution, and completion of a Quality Improvement project (by end of year 2) as well as identify and submit a case or research for presentation at a national meeting (AMSSM, ACSM, AAP).
  • Clinical rotations: fellow Continuity clinic 4-5 half days/week, nutrition, pain clinic, as well as time for elective rotations
  • Sports coverage: dedicated high school, training room and game coverage at Grand Canyon University (GCU), community-based sporting event opportunities (with opportunity to be medical director for events)

Advanced Degree Options

  • All fellows have access to obtaining a master’s degree (of their choice) through the University of Arizona with tuition remittance as a faculty member. A newly created program, master’s in clinical sciences, is now available.
