Position Summary & Responsibilities

Pharmacy Residency Program

The Phoenix Children's Hospital Postgraduate Year One (PGY1) Pharmacy Residency Program builds on Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists and future leaders in pediatric pharmacy practice. Residency graduates will be proficient in medication-related care of pediatric patients with a wide range of conditions enabling them to pursue a clinical specialist or staff pharmacist position or Postgraduate Year Two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.

Phoenix Children’s Hospital offers a challenging, yet flexible, program where motivated residents ensure the application of safe and effective evidence-based medicine practices to pediatric patients. In addition, residents participate in ongoing service activities to develop their ability to solve problems, think critically, and work with others in various settings while advancing the practice of pharmacy and enhancing patient care. Further expansion of these skills will come with exposure to pharmacy department policies and procedures while staffing in the central pharmacy every third weekend and one evening every other week. Residents are assigned clinical responsibilities under the preceptorship of an experienced pharmacist to guide development of their practice skills. Successful completion of the Residency Program requires the achievement of 90% of the required American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) PGY1 Residency Program Goals and Objectives. In addition to the required and elective learning experiences, residents of the Phoenix Children’s Hospital PGY-1 Pediatric Pharmacy Residency Program are actively engaged in leadership skills development and paired with leadership mentors throughout the program to transcend the application of clinical skills via leadership strategies.

Throughout the residency year, the resident will be involved in the following:

  • Active participation in daily patient care rounds, therapeutic drug monitoring, and provision of drug information to the medical team.
  • Perform direct and indirect patient care activities through various programs, including medication therapy management (MTM), quality improvement interventions, and drug utilization review.
  • Present medication monographs and therapy class reviews to the Pharmacy and Therapeutics (P&T) Committee.
  • Complete a residency research project suitable for publication and present results at the Southwestern States Residency Conference.
  • Staff in the inpatient pharmacy every third weekend and one evening every other week.
  • Earn a teaching certificate through Midwestern University College of Pharmacy- Glendale Clinician Educators Program.
