Gender Proud PFAC

Patient and Family Advisory Councils

The Gender Proud PFAC is the designated Patient and Family Advisory Council for Phoenix Children’s Gender Support Program. The passionate group consists of Phoenix Children’s administrators, staff, family, caregivers all who volunteer to focus their efforts on improving the patient and family experience. This has been done through participating in staff training and education, developing materials for patient and family education, as well as support, and advancing both diversity and inclusion in the organization.

Recent Accomplishments

  • Developed a Mental Health Care Resource for patients and families listing affirmative and LGBTQ competent mental health providers in the community
  • Advanced LGBTQ visibility, diversity, and inclusion in the outpatient and clinic settings and in the organization: the Council has led efforts to provide PRIDE and pronoun buttons for patients, PRIDE shirts for clinic staff, and other enhancements to the clinic environment to communicate safe and inclusive spaces for LGBTQ youth

Growing Together: From Paula Charlebois, Gender Proud PFAC Member

“Our family has had children treated in Phoenix Children’s clinics since the hospital was first built. One of our children is transgender. Back when we started on this journey with him there were no therapists or doctors working in the entire Phoenix metro area with transgender children.

We belonged to a support group, which at that time was pretty small, however at one meeting, Dr. Chulani told us about a program that he was starting at Phoenix Children’s. I was literally crying as he spoke. I think the first time we went to Dr. Chulani’s clinic I was almost afraid that it was too good to be true.

Being on the Patient and Family Advisory Council has been a blessing for me as a parent. I get to see all the small changes that have been made at Phoenix Children’s that effect my child in a big way!”
